Calvary Baptist Church
Calvary Baptist Church describes itself as a traditional, conservative Independent Baptist church that holds fast to the fundamentals of the Christian faith. It holds the Old and New Testaments to be the verbally inspired, inerrant Word of God and the sole authority for faith and life, and uses only the Authorized King James Version, which it believes is the preserved Word of God for English-speaking people. It teaches salvation by grace through faith alone in Christ's atoning death and bodily resurrection, baptizes believers only, by immersion, before they join the church or share in the Lord's Supper, and looks for the rapture of the saints before the tribulation and Christ's thousand-year reign.
Calvary Baptist Church is an independent Baptist congregation that meets in a small building on Penny Lane, the lane between Zina and Elizabeth Streets behind First Street in downtown Orangeville; the church gives its address as 22 Penny Lane or 22 First Street (rear). It describes itself as a multi-ethnic community of believers and says that, as an Independent Baptist church, it has no denominational structure and is under the headship and authority of Jesus Christ.
The pastor is Daniel Elliott, a graduate of Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, who served as a missionary in Mongolia and South Korea. In 2021 the Elliotts answered a call to Canada, and he soon afterwards became Calvary’s pastor. Until January 2025 the church gave its address as 553281 Dufferin Road 16, the address of the Orangeville Christian School in Mono, north-west of the town; its first service in the new building on Penny Lane was set for 2 February 2025.
Sunday begins with Refresh Groups and children’s Sunday school at half past nine, followed by the morning service at half past ten, a light lunch, and an afternoon service at one, and a midweek service is held on Wednesday evenings. The church distributes tracts in the community on Saturday mornings, offers a Soul Winners Academy on sharing the faith two or three times a year, and gives monthly to support missionaries overseas.
What to expect
The church says visitors will be greeted by its members and pastor. Its music is built around Biblical themes and includes traditional hymns, and on Sunday mornings an instrumental piece is played during the offering. Sermons are preached from the King James Version and built around the point of the Bible passage being taught. Families may keep their children with them in the sanctuary.
