## What they believe
The Uptown Church describes itself as 'a Godfearing, Bible-believing, Trinitarian church full of gospel joy in the heart of downtown Orangeville.' It affirms the Apostles', Nicene and Athanasian creeds and the Chalcedonian Definition as summaries of Scripture, holds the 66 books of the Bible to be the inspired and inerrant Word of God, and believes that salvation is by God's sovereign grace through faith in Christ alone. It holds baptism and communion to be the greater sacraments of the gospel and, together with what it calls the apostolic sacraments of reconciliation, anointing, ordination and matrimony, real means of grace received by faith; it is led by elders and deacons, with the office of elder reserved to men.

## What to expect
Morning worship begins at 10:30 a.m. and usually lasts about an hour and a half. It opens with a call to worship, announcements, prayer and the passing of the peace, and includes the Lord's Prayer, the public reading of Scripture, up to six psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, a creed or responsive reading, an expository sermon of 30 to 45 minutes and a time of confession, closing with a sending song and a benediction; fellowship, testimony and prayer over coffee follow. Children aged 1 to 10 are called forward to be blessed and then go to the nursery or preschool on the second floor or, from age 7, collect activity sheets in the front foyer and return to the sanctuary, though parents are welcome to keep their children with them. There is no dress code, though the church asks people to dress modestly, and parking is free on Sundays on Broadway and in the lot beside and behind the building.

## About this congregation
The Uptown Church, legally registered as Good Friends Fellowship Church, worships in the former Uptown Theatre on Broadway in downtown Orangeville. The church's account of the building records that the cinema was built around 1927, near the end of the silent-film era, was remodelled in the late 1940s, and gained its marquee in 1971 and a second screen upstairs in the 1970s; it closed in 2002 and the church bought it shortly afterwards. The congregation says more than 26,000 volunteer hours went into cleaning and restoring the building. It restored the old theatre seats in the main-floor auditorium that serves as its sanctuary, refurbished the marquee and its lighting in 2014, and still screens faith-based films there. The building lies within the Town's Downtown Heritage Conservation District.

The church is led by its elders: Matlock Bobechko, the senior pastor, Rod Hembree, the associate pastor, and Gino Girone, an evangelist. Morning worship is at 10:30 a.m. and evening worship at 7:00 p.m. on Sundays, with communion on the first Sunday of the month. During the week there are Bible studies for men and for women, a street evangelism ministry and a monthly chess club.

The Lighthouse, the church's community meal program, has run for about two decades. It serves a home-cooked lunch from Monday to Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., to between 25 and 40 people a day, and takes meals to people who are homebound, in hospital or shut in; other local churches and community organizations help support it.
